This is the opening volume of Greg Egan's Orthogonal Trilogy, a hard-SF series whose premise is that the substrate of physical law differs radically from ours. Detailed overview

The Clockwork Rocket begins with Yalda as an oversized child on Vito's farm, carrying her grandfather Dario to the forest after Doctor Livia diagnoses his light deficiency. That opening gives the book its method: alien biology, color, light, family obligation, and practical labor are never background ornament.
